Chaotic

Over the past month, this graph has shown completely chaotic behavior.

[http://www.electoral-vote.com/]

I interpret it as having major trends, but nothing that is meaningul on the week timescale.

Doesn’t the last month look like this chatoic data?

[logistic]

This graph is from the logistic equation:

#!/usr/bin/perl
$x=0.5;
foreach $n (0..600){
    $x = $x*(1-$x)*3.8;
    if ( $n % 11 == 0) {
        print "$n $x \n" if ($n>200); }
}

broadsheet

The London Times will no longer print a broadsheet edition; instead they will print only an easy to read tabloid edition. (source)

I’ve always hated the size of boradsheets. They are too big to fold easily. So why are they that size? “Historically, broadsheets were developed when in 1712 a tax was placed on British newspapers based on the number of their pages.” (source)

More Digital Millennium Copyright Act Stupidity.

I used to be able to go to the WPR website to find out what’s playing now. Not anymore:

Effective February 26, 2004, our music listings are only be available starting the day after broadcast. Information will continue to be available at all times from WPR Listener Services at 1-800-747-7444. We apologize for what we hope will be a temporary inconvenience.

Unfortunately, a recent ruling on the scope of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act passed by Congress prohibits us from making advance play lists available to the public as long as we stream our broadcast service on the Internet. WPR is working with CPB, NPR and similarly affected public radio stations around the country to secure permission from the music industry to reinstate this service. Again, our sincere apologies.

Kerry Rally

Here are photos from the Kerry rally in Madison 2004-10-28.

[Thumb] Mark and Orelia jumping in line.

[Thumb] Metaphotography. Photo of Mark photographing the line to get in the rally. We got in the line at the echo tap. The entrance was up near the central library. Later I’ll put in a map.

[map] A map. The red is a solid mass of people at the rally. The green is is the line to get in, as far as I know it went. there was another line for VIPs. I don’t know how long that one was.

[Thumb] Photo of speaker (a red dot), who might be Russ Feingold. Taken with the telephoto adapter.

[Thumb] There was a screen closeby. Here is Dave Grohl on the screen. He’s not much of a speaker. Without the whole band, he is only rocking at 50% efficiency.

[Thumb] Kids in a tree. Everybody likes kids.

[Thumb] The back of Mark and Orelia’s heads.

[Thumb] Kerry on the screen.

[Thumb] Kerry.

[Thumb] Without the telephoto lens—what we really got to see.

More photos.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

[book cover detail]

I’m reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? right now. Why didn’t I ever read this before? It’s such a deep book, while still readable.

I should listen to Christopher Wilson more often; he recomended I read this a while ago.

LexisNexis

Wow. Edgewood College gives LexisNexis access to all students and faculty. That’s so cool.

two or three alternate routes

If you are black and a resident of Florida, work out two or three alternate routes to your polling place to avoid police checkpoints.

Mathematical Writing, part 2

An interesting article: “Writing For A Math Class

I disagree with the article on issues of style. For style questions, I would defer to Knuth above most other authorities.

Mathematical Writing, part 1

I am enjoying Mathematical Writing by Donald E. Knuth, Tracy Larrabee, and Paul M. Roberts.

“I look forward to the day when a Pulitzer Prize will be given for the best computer program of the year.” —Knuth
