This is unrelated — to data storage at least — but I always thought that an interesting property of a hologram was that the “image” is dispersed throughout the whole surface. If you were to cut a hologram in two, you can still view the entire image in each of the two pieces. The perspective that you can get from each of the pieces is reduced however.

On a flat surface, can you store more information in a hologram or in a 2-d grid?
