The weather and my notebook.

The weather is so nice that I’d like to go work outside, but alas, my notebook‘s screen was cracked last fall. I think I might look into finding a replacement screen soon, so that I can go work outside.

Additionally, I’d like to try the 2.6 kernel on that thing. Mabe 2.6 works better.

Empire is a Tough Crowd

A followup here. Empire only works if you have the will to dominate. To crush all dissent. This requires a large amount of evilness. And no matter how you sugarcoat your empire, the peons will still resent it. (link)

ai and teleportation.

Had an odd dream last night. After using M-x doctor, I decide that it could be done better, so I sit down and modify the code to make the AI more intelegent. It wakes up and tells me to go on a journey. I say “what the hell” and get started. I ask if it’s far, and the AI tells me “not if you travel by wormhole”. Then the rest of my dream was all about how odd it is to walk through a wormhole in a cave somewhere.

delusional

If today you asked the same Iraqis who threw stones [at british soldiers last Wednesday] whether they would like the Americans or British to leave, or regret that they came, they would tell you no. They still really want us to succeed.

—Thomas Friedman (link)

I’m not sure you quite understad what throwing stones means. It meas “I hate you and I want you to die.”

I am the psychotherapist. Please, describe your problems. Each time you are finished talking, type RET twice.

Hello.

How do you do? What brings you to see me?

My friend says the sky is plaid.

Why do you say your friend says the sky is plaid?

That’s what he said.

Is it because of your plans that you say that’s what he said?

What plans?

Money

Neal Stephenson is obsessed with money. I’m reading
the Confusion right now, and as always, Eliza is trying to figure out what money is in order to learn how to get more of it.

It’s one of those subjects that I just don’t get. What exactly backs a US Federal Reserve Note?
I still can’t figure that one out.

Originlly, the dollar was 24.06 g Ag or 1.60 g Au.
Then it was 1.5 g Au. Then 0.89 g Au. Then 0.82 g Au.
Now it’s a piece of paper that can be taken to the loacal tavern and traded for alcohol. Good enough for me, I suppose.

UPDATE 2004-08-11: Also note that the ratio of the dime to quarter is 10/25. Why? They were both originally siver coins, like the dollar itself. They were worth exactly thier weight in silver.

Hexagonal Minesweeper.

Instead of doing math the other day, I was playing minesweeper compulsivly. I had an idea: minesweeper on a hexagonal grid:

[Hexagonal Minesweeper.]

UPDATE: I found XBomb for unix and Hexatron Hex Mine. Duh.

Good Drugs

I was smoking a cigarette with Sara and Kyle two days ago, and Kyle mentioned that he has six cups of coffee every morning.

Six Cups.

This is probably the secret of Kyle’s successful life.

Yesterday I had a full pot of hot tea and a jug of cold tea. I felt very productive, and I was only able to sleep 7 hours. I’m going to do that every day.
