Fumes

Was working on my haloween costume last night. It was probably a
mistake to leave the hot glue gun on all night. Did you know that the
glue will eventually begin to oxidize?

itunes review.

I downloaded iTunes for windows the other day. I had seen the program before, most notably running the music for all of Aaron’s partys for the last three years, abut I had not used it before.

It seems vastly superior to Windows Media Player, but I can’t put my finger on how. Compared to Musicmatch Jukebox (which crashed whenever I tried to update my ipod), it is wonderful.

It would seem that the apple design philosophy is to hide most options from the user. So I had to go looking for help on turning on Manual Mode iPod syncing. Most users would have given up.

I’ve bought two albums on the iTMS. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing yet.

My iPod playlist os now 1690 songs, 5.2days/7.19Gb of Music. I better go ahead and fill it up.

…Uh oh. I just got an error while updating the iPod. Hey, at least no programs crashed! I’ll just reformat the disc. That usually helps, especially after a firmware upgrade.

And now It just lost most of my music library. I’ll have to readd those files. And importing files into the library is the one thing that’s not properly multithreaded.

I’ll let you know how this works out.

Grilled Cheese and MEAT!

Here’s a recipe:

  1. Get two slices of bread. (I like whole wheat)
  2. Let some butter sit out for a few minutes, until it gets mushy. Noone likes firm butter.
  3. Slice some cheese into thin slices. I like medium chedder or colby.
  4. Get some thin slices of smaked turkey or other meat. I simply used lunch meat from the deli.
  5. Put it all together: bread, layer of cheese, layer of meat, layer of cheese, and bread.
  6. Then spread a large amount of butter evenly on the outside of the bread.
  7. Put a pan on the stove. Heat to medium-hot.
  8. Grill until the bttom layer of cheese looks kinda soft. Flip and repeat. Then flip once more for the fianl bit of toasting. Bread should be a beautiful golden color.
  9. Cut in half.
  10. Eat.

ssh discovery.

The biggest problem with ssh is the vulnerability to a man-in-the-middle attack. This is why you should always check your host-key’s fingerprint when logging on for the first time from a new box. To aquire these keys, do this:

for x in /etc/ssh/*pub; do
   ssh-keygen -lf $x;
done

Week Summary.

Read Mary Doria Russell’s Sparrow and Children of God. Were very good. I recommend.

Am slightly confused in topology class. I think this is okay. Am finally on payroll in Math department.

Been programming. Have made good progress.

Did landscaping at a friend’s house yesterday. Was fun. Still don’t want to be responsible for long-term well being of plants or own property.

UPDATE 2004-08-11: Links for The Sparrow and Children of God.

Platonism.

Mark said some things the other day that I didn’t respond to because I was drunk. Here we go:

General Platonism is the belief that there exist transcendent truths. That’s it. Nothing more here. One of these truths is “(ZFC)=>(1+2=3)”. I won’t even comment on whether or not ZFC is true.

So, to conclude, General Platonism is a belief, yes, but it cannot be considered a religion.

Friday

I woke up this morning and wandered into the living room. Other people bring home girls from parties, I have someone else’s sparc-station sitting on my coffee table.

Yesterday I worked from home in the morning. I mangled my email with a photo: (my email address is my first name at this domain.) I still don’t know if that is a good or bad approach to reducing spam.

After some research, I now think it will be trivial to backport my java 1.2 applets to 1.1.

Went to the math colloqium. Didn’t understand much, but there were pretty topology-type pictures. Also tried to socalize with mathematicians before-hand. Don’t know enough of them.

Went to LUG, and got some pointers on iptables. Realized that I had met Staci at First Friday Party in past. Gave her ride to this one, but she left a sparc sation in my car. I brought it in out of the cold last night. That is why it’s in my living room.

css junk

As a html author, should I use

<a name="bleg">Text</a>

or

<a name="bleg"></a>Text?

It only matters if one has defined something in css for "a:hover". The W3C doesn’t specify that :hover should apply to any specific element. So one could define css:

span.highlight:hover {
  background-color:#ffffaa;
  color:#000000; }

and use html:

words, <span class="highlight">
 words,</span> words!

All this implies that I should make a point to immediately close "<a name=…" tags, unless I want highlighting.
